What is Root canal treatment?

Root canal is the natural cavity in the centre of the tooth which contains a soft area known as pulp which contains the nerves and blood vessels which supply the sensation to the tooth. Root canal therapy is a procedure wherein the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth involving the pulp is removed and thereafter the canals are cleaned, disinfected and filled with a biocompatible material so as to save the tooth from extraction and keep it in function.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal is done under local anaesthesia and the procedure as such is painless with the modern techniques and instruments available nowadays. The pain is usually caused by the infection in the tooth and not because of the treatment. In fact the root canal therapy is done to eliminate the pain.

How many visits are required for root canal treatment?

Standard root canal treatment requires two visits. However, depending on the cause of pain and the infection, the dentist will decide to complete either in a single visit or more than two visits.
